I just finished day one of Underground Strength Coach Cert out here in Austin. Yesterday got to speak to all the coaches at CrossFit Central and right now, I’m actually watching a video here on YouTube and I’m not even sure how I came across this. But it’s all those like motivational videos and the dare to be great videos and our deepest fears that we are inadequate and came across a video here by Ray Lewis.

And what’s real interesting and what parallels with what he says and what I say is beside the fact that I’m not in the NFL is that somehow someway by going through hell in my life and having these downtimes as I got to a point where I said, “Screw it,” I can become as great as I want to become, period, and the power is in your hands. It’s totally up to you. OK?

If you don’t want to be a leader, if you don’t want to achieve great success, you won’t but nobody is going to give it to you. You have to go out and earn it and that means doing a lot of things that other people don’t want to do. It means your mind has to be trained. Your body has to be trained and you have to be committed to excellence.

You have to raise the bar. You have to take things to a higher level. Hold yourself to a higher standard. Yesterday, while having dinner with Jeremy Thiel, Doug Katona, Brian MacKenzie, we were speaking about the mind and that how it’s OK during a workout to suffer and that just really reminded me today that while everybody is going to go to lunch, I need to push and get in a workout. Go through a tough workout. No need to eat food. Let my body be hungry and let my body get used to training while hungry. Always be hungry and just commitment to excellence.

The coaches today seriously went through some brutal training and what’s really interesting is that their technique improved by the time that 3 o’clock and 4 o’clock rolled around compared to what they did in the beginning of the day when they were fresh. They raised their own standard, their own personal standard. They took their commitment to excellence, took it to the next level.

The majority of people are fine with being average and mediocre. It’s up to you to decide if you want to be mediocre and accept mediocrity and being average or if you want to shoot for excellence.

Push yourself outside of the comfort zone. Nobody is going to give it to you. You got to earn it and by doing that, that means live the code. Do all the things that are the right things to do to take you to the next level and oftentimes, that means doing the things that the majority of people don’t want to do and won’t do.

It’s in your grasp. It’s totally up to you. That’s the truth. If I could tell you this one thing, you listen to Ray Lewis saying he’s not – doesn’t have any special skill. Well hey, if you’re in the NFL, right? We know you’ve got special skills. But he says that the one thing that he does have that a lot of the other guys don’t have compared to him is his ability to do the work and to never quit.

And that’s why I prefer training and workouts that don’t really focus on just the numbers, to dead lift more, to squat more, to bench more. I like workouts that push me and kind of mess with my head and put me to the point where they want to make me quit but I have to keep up with the other guy who’s ahead of me. I have to get to that next part of the workout because that builds me and builds you into a stronger, better person. It starts up here. If you don’t got it right in the mind, it isn’t going to be right anywhere else. Train the mind. Train the body. But this has to be the most powerful part of everything that you do, period, end of story.
