bill phillips and joe polishI love biographies! Something about reading about the successes of other people and how they got there that makes you realize what you’re capable of. What I especially love is to learn about their humble beginning and adversities, most of which make anything you think is stopping you look really small in comparison.

On that note I bring you the first a special five part series I’m calling TOP FIVE TRAINERS TURNED MARKETERS OF ALL TIME.

If you follow this blog you know who Dave Parise is – the man is basically the prototype Personal Trainer … And one thing about Dave is he’s never shy or hesitant to share his vast wisdom; he did over 1.6 MILLION in sales at his facility in Connecticut without any of the direct response advertising tactics I’ve told you about and you’ve been reading about on the web – just plain old fashioned positive PR! Here are a couple of choice bits of wisdom from the master, and a couple of excellent and tremendously AFFORDABLE tools he’s put out there for trainers to take what they do to the top-level: _______________________________________________________ Ultimately, it’s not about certification… it’s about application! By Dave Parise Super Trainer Advisory Board Please remember certifications mean nothing. They look great on the wall. If they make you feel better, then so be it. I once read a book on surgery, does that make me a doctor? I want you to take time to look around at some of the exercises being performed at your fitness center. You may have a laugh, a wonder, or a moment of insight. I hope you see and understand the [...]

PERSONAL TRAINING SECRETS OF THE WORLD’S MOST RIPPED MOM REVEALED!!! Personal Trainer Lauren Brooks Miller talks about how to balance training and life …

What do porn and Top-Level Training have in common? They’re both hard to define, but you know it when you see it! And I certainly found it (Top-Level Training, not porn) in the training practice of Southern California’s Kettlebell Queen, Lauren Brooks Miller. Like I always talk about on the blog, I didn’t invent this thing; I learned and applied it through observing the trainers that got it right. Lauren is just such a trainer. She’s put it all together into a practice that fits her interests, training, lifestyle, and career goals. It’s pumping on all cynlinders, and is a clear example of what an ideal training practice should be like, and the continuity that every Personal Trainer should be building toward.

MAKING THE JUMP! Talking to Marc Lebert, the da Vinci of Fitness, About Life After PERSONAL TRAINING …

Posted on 28. Aug, 2008 by .

It’s a little weird talking about life after training. That’s cuz I’m still very much in the midst of it, making great money at it and loving every minute. But for me and I’ve got to say for everyone else, Personal Training is part of a growth process. You could say Super-Trainer’s been part of my growth process, exposing me to new ideas in training and I hope it’s giving you the same thing too. But once you’ve established yourself as a trainer and have a high-level training practice that’s pumping on all cylinders, that’s still not the end. Like I talk about in The Whistleblower Report it’s just the beginning. You’ll now be in a really unique position to move on to even greater things in the training industry. What those greater things are is up to you … that’s what I call THE JUMP. To talk about this subject I wanted to bring on a trainer who’s made that JUMP in multiple areas: Marc Lebert. Marc’s best known as the inventor of the Lebert Equalizer, but that’s just one of the fitness projects he’s involved in. With all the things Marc’s got going on, you’d have to call [...]

JASON HADEED – REST IN PEACE – My Amazing Final Interview With The Tremendous Personal Trainer, Father, And Human Being (full audio – originally posted 2/20 – new video added).

Last week we lost one of the best trainers in the country. Jason Hadeed of E.A.T.S. in Germantown Maryland was senselessly murdered in his apartment complex. His killer turned himself in to police an hour later. Jason leaves behind 2 children, the many people whose lives he’s improved through fitness, and the numerous others that he’s influenced by the human being he was. I had the chance to speak to Jason on January 18th in an interview for Super-Trainer. It may have been his last interview, and you can find it at the end of this post. Here is the introduction to this post which I’ve recorded recently, highlighting the important points from the interview: Jason was an accomplished trainer and an even better man with a genuine interest and desire to help other people. I can’t claim to have known him personally, but I did follow his career – how could you not? As a professional fitness coach in the NFL, running E.A.T.S., working on the Olympic level, and holding his own series of training conferences, he was on the short list of the most experienced trainers in the country. But in the few times I had the chance [...]

IS PERSONAL TRAINING A REAL CAREER? EXHIBIT A: DAVE PARISE – Listen to my interview with Personal Trainer Dave Parise (plus video intro).

When most kids grow up they dream of being doctors, lawyers, or even astronauts. If they only knew what being a Top-Level Trainer was like, they might change their minds! The truth is Personal Training doesn’t always get the respect it deserves as a real profession. While the public and media generally paint a really favorable image of this job, it’s within the industry that I see most of the apathy. Too many people look at it as just a hustle or a part-time job, not a real career track with tremendous potential and room for growth. For that reason I wanted to get a guest on here that would change all that. The first person that came to mind was Dave Parise, one of the consumate pros in this business with a long history of top flight training.

FINDING YODA: MY CONVERSATION WITH GUNNAR PETERSON – Talking to the man that got me serious about Personal Training (listen to the full audio).

Posted on 24. Mar, 2008 by .

It took almost three weeks of back and forth, speaking through assistants and balancing time-zones. I didn’t have any friends in common with the man, so it was a shot in the dark, but one day while sitting in a Starbucks, I got what I was looking for: my phone rang and the person on the other end said “Hello Kaiser, this is Gunnar Peterson!”. I know every single person reading this blog knows who I’m talking about; for all purposes, Gunnar’s the face of the Personal Training industry. He lives in a Hollywood Hills Mansion and is as much a celebrity as many of the stars he trains. Besides speaking to someone with such notoriety in this business, for me the thrill was even more significant: I was talking to the man who basically got me started and serious about Personal Training in the first place.

STEP YOUR GAME UP! TALKING TO STEVE COTTER – The King of Kettlebells talks techniques and training (listen to our full audio).

Staying on top of your game in this business is very important. While doing some continuing ed recently, I found out one glaring weakness in my training arsenal – kettlebells. You see them in every gym and studio these days, and I have to admit that I knew little about their use and benefits. In doing some research into it, I learned about one of the front-runners in this field, who himself started as a Personal Trainer and is now the world’s leading educator on kettlebells: Steve Cotter. A lot of times in Personal Training, we see trainers with little technical knowledge or personal experience getting ahead on just personality and connections. But that’s not the case with Steve. He’s an example of someone that’s really paid his dues, first as a full contact fighting champion, and then earning his degree in kinesiology and as I mentioned, beginning his career as a Personal Trainer.

WEB 101 FOR TRAINERS – YOUR TEACHER: SCOTT WHITE – Scott breaks down the web for Personal Trainers.

I know all of you at one time or another has typed the term “Personal Training” into Google out of curiosity. When you did, right there in the top ten results, along with Wikipedia and all the big training companies with huge advertising budgets, you surely saw Scott White’s gleaming bald head shining back at you. If you didn’t know, the web is the best way to get new clients (next to referrals) for every Personal Trainer. Even if you’re familiar with the web, marketing online is a completely different science. With his success at consistently getting top ten results nationally, Scott’s the undoubted master at it in this field. I wanted to get Scott on here to talk about how he does it and see if we could squeeze a few secrets out of him.

MIKE BOYLE ON RUNNING A TRAINING BUSINESS – Find out how Mike does it (audio clip from our conversation).

Some trainers, even the most knowledgeable ones, often get too caught up in the training part of this profession. They think that just additional training knowledge will break them out of the ruts they’re suffering through in their careers. While noone will argue whether a strong background in training is a must, at some point you need to think critically about this as a business. You’ve got to think not only about your body of knowledge, but about your career as well, or you’re never going to have the type of lifestyle that should typify someone in the fitness industry. For me, the breakthrough came when thinking about my own personal image, positioning, and marketing. But on a much bigger scale, I recently got to pick the brain of a guy running not just a private practice, but what could be called a training empire touching nearly every area of Personal Training, Mike Boyle.

MEET EUGENE THONG, TLT – Top Level Trainer talks about how he does it.

Posted on 15. Jan, 2008 by .

As a great man once said – “Let me see that THONG” – Or in this case I wanted to talk to him: I’m referring to fellow trainer Eugene Thong. For every trainer out there who gets big-time media coverage, trains a roster of stars, or is selling a new workout machine, there are dozens who you may never hear about but that are making great livings in this business. We call them Top-Level Trainers, and Eugene’s one of them. I first found out about him when I came across his blog while doing research online late one night. I ended up spending the next 3 hours completely engrossed by his in-depth posts, probably more for my own fitness than my clients. You can find it at www.eugenization.com.

PERSONAL TRAINING ON CRACK! Jamo Nezzar acts a fool (watch the video).

Posted on 10. Oct, 2007 by .

Funny what you’ll find on YouTube these days … I found a video clip of fellow Personal Trainer Jamo Nezzar, part of the launch of his new online training program, Jamcore Training. Most people need to smoke a gram of crack to feel as good as Jamo! Just goes to show how it feels when you love what you do. All jokes aside, Jamo’s one of the top trainers in the business. In a past life, he was a professional bodybuilder, one of the hardest sports in the world to reach pro status in. Jamo has run a successful Personal Training business for years in San Jose, California before starting his online venture; and from reviewing the site and reading his blog, he’s put together an extremely strong team at Jamcore. Here’s the video: Jamo’s (entertaining) online venture is an example of one of the privileges Personal Training offers you, what I call the JUMP, moving from one-on-one Training to other aspects of the fitness field. This is a multi-billion dollar industry, some say soon to be a trillion dollars, and it’s rate of growth just continues to accelerate. With the endless possibilities it offers, Personal Trainers have the unique [...]
