Mikey likes it!  Do you remember that one?  That was the old LIFE cereal ad, and was my first exposure to testimonial based advertising … Even though that particular commercial was dramatized, there’s no doubt testimonials work – not because I think so, but because they’ve been tested numerous times for their effect. But most trainers either don’t use them or don’t use them enough.  I happen to think that testimonials have a special and greater importance as it applies to the marketing of personal training, so that even magnifies the need for them. I sent out a brief lesson to the SUPER-TRAINER LICENSEES on the subject recently, but I think the lesson is so valuable that it shouldn’t be kept under wraps – Here was the note I sent them: ———————————————————————————————– As we’ve talked about on the blog many times, REFERRALS are the absolute best form of marketing for any service professional. If you’re looking to make your break from a hell-hole big-box gym, one of the fastest and easiest ways is through a deal with an existing private gym.  These places are usually short on good trainers, don’t have a clue on how to sell training (so they don’t even bother), and have a hugely under-served market.  If you’re good at selling sessions in a big gym, getting into to one of these places is like shooting candy from a baby in a barrel. This also saves you the trouble of having to make a website or market your services in your area.  Marketing can be the most time-consuming, “scary”, costly, and highest learning curve parts of doing business for a trainer, and making a deal with a private gym allows you to skip this step. Here’s why: The clients are already there, you just have to bring them in. You just have to understand basic relationship-based personal training sales and some creative in-gym marketing, and you’ll find yourself booked beyond belief. Yes, if you want to make an immediate move to private training, double your income while cutting your hours, not have a boss, and control your own ship, this [...]

News flash: from the time you wake up to the time you fall asleep, you’re being sold to.  If you live in America or anywhere else, almost every waking decision you make is a commercial one. Sad huh?  But here’s one way to kind of get yourself out of “The Matrix” if you will – start doing the selling yourself.  Once you start to understood why people buy, you learn a lot about yourself in the process. Want to know what’s even funnier?  Personal Training isn’t a hard product – it’s completely intangible.  That’s where things start getting freaky – because you’re learning to find out the emotional reasons that motivate people to buy something that doesn’t even exist. Before we start over-thinking things, there’s one way can cut to the front of the line and understand selling, without having to read a ton of books or even have much practice at it: Realizing selling Personal Training is all about THE RELATIONSHIP. With a service like Personal Training, where the customer KNOWS they will be spending more time with their trainer than almost anyone else in their entire lives, especially if they’re single, most of the decision about the sale [...]
