This five part TRAINERS TURNED ENTREPRENEURS series has been crazy – it’s the most fun I’ve had all summer (wow, that’s pretty pathetic!). All jokes aside, it’s been fun to explore some of the biggest names in fitness, and that’s not even the best part … What’s been amazing, and something I totally wasn’t expecting, is how every one of them had a start in direct response/information marketing.  We discovered that what we’re all trying to do with fitness online actually has a rich, deep-rooted history that stretches back for over a century. So no matter who you are or what the project is that you’re growing, it should be obvious that we have some tremendous trailblazers that have set that stage and shown us what’s possible. Ok – now we’re on to our last part of the series, and it’s a man that needs no introduction.  For all of our lives, his name has been synonymous with fitness – the great Jack Lalanne. Now 94 years old, Jack stands as a shining example of what’s possible in fitness – wealth, health, success and longevity. He also stands as an example of the ideal career progression in the fitness industry.  [...]

bill phillips and joe polishI love biographies! Something about reading about the successes of other people and how they got there that makes you realize what you’re capable of. What I especially love is to learn about their humble beginning and adversities, most of which make anything you think is stopping you look really small in comparison.

On that note I bring you the first a special five part series I’m calling TOP FIVE TRAINERS TURNED MARKETERS OF ALL TIME.

I know it’s been over a week and I’m a little late with this post – to make up for it this one’s VERY LONG and SUPER-GOOD … FITNESS ENTREPRENEUR – that’s a term that gets thrown around A LOT, and is used to describe every Personal Trainer, anyone that’s ever written an e-book, or tried to make a buck in any way in fitness. But I recently had the pleasure to speak to a guy that’s taken the term to a completely different level – John Spencer Ellis. If I sound like a fan, it’s because the things John’s involved with will blow you away! He’s broken the mold and branded himself to a point where he has no competition, and set a new standard for making money in fitness.

FINDING YODA: MY CONVERSATION WITH GUNNAR PETERSON – Talking to the man that got me serious about Personal Training (listen to the full audio).

It took almost three weeks of back and forth, speaking through assistants and balancing time-zones. I didn’t have any friends in common with the man, so it was a shot in the dark, but one day while sitting in a Starbucks, I got what I was looking for: my phone rang and the person on the other end said “Hello Kaiser, this is Gunnar Peterson!”. I know every single person reading this blog knows who I’m talking about; for all purposes, Gunnar’s the face of the Personal Training industry. He lives in a Hollywood Hills Mansion and is as much a celebrity as many of the stars he trains. Besides speaking to someone with such notoriety in this business, for me the thrill was even more significant: I was talking to the man who basically got me started and serious about Personal Training in the first place.

Some trainers, even the most knowledgeable ones, often get too caught up in the training part of this profession. They think that just additional training knowledge will break them out of the ruts they’re suffering through in their careers. While noone will argue whether a strong background in training is a must, at some point you need to think critically about this as a business. You’ve got to think not only about your body of knowledge, but about your career as well, or you’re never going to have the type of lifestyle that should typify someone in the fitness industry. For me, the breakthrough came when thinking about my own personal image, positioning, and marketing. But on a much bigger scale, I recently got to pick the brain of a guy running not just a private practice, but what could be called a training empire touching nearly every area of Personal Training, Mike Boyle.

TOP LEVEL PERSONAL TRAINERS FEATURED IN THE NEW YORK TIMES – Find out about the new age of Personal Training: training without limits.

I just got my hands on an article from late 2005 from the New York Times and it was pretty shocking. What’s the main point of the article? Personal Training isn’t your usual job – it can’t be bound by the confines of a gym, can’t be punched in a clock, and your heart is the only qualification you need. The main trainer focused in the article was Juris Kupris. Juris is the prototype Top-Level Trainer; visiting his web-site, you’ll notice absolutely impeccable personal marketing and image management. Let’s sing his praises for a bit: He’s used the media to establish himself as a fitness expert (takes some dedication, but fairly simple) Focused on a target market that can deliver a high return in terms of training usage and high-value referrals Has branched into other sources of income other than hourly sessions (he’s released a DVD collection)
